It is a shame when parents unwittingly pass on their fears of the dentist to their children, even before they have made their first ever visit. Parents often do this without realising by saying things like "Don't worry. It won't hurt", which immediately brings into the child's mind the possibility that it might hurt, a thought that would probably never have entered their heads had it not been mentioned. By making a big deal about going to the dentist we stir up unnecessary apprehension and anxiety in a child.
Fortunately, dentistry for children is now, like that for adults, much better for modern technology and pretty much pain free. You will want to sign up your child to see a regular dentist for routine check ups to detect any decay and treat it before it can progress, and many children require straightening of their teeth as they get older. This is a specialised branch of dentistry and an expert such as the Invisible Orthodontist or similar orthodontic practitioner may be needed.
In terms of routine dentistry it is quite a good idea to get your child used to the dentist by taking him or her along with you when you go just for a routine check up yourself. Good practices have competent nurses who are capabble of helping to look after a child whilst the mother is in the dental chair. (more...)
